Can you imagine the power of information just one radio can provide to a community during these turbulent times?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As I&#8217;ve mentioned before, Gareth Mitchell once interviewed me for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p00bqv4v\" target=\"_blank\">BBC World Service technology program <em>Click<\/em><\/a>. Mitchell&#8217;s interview focused specifically on my non-profit, <a title=\"ETOW\" href=\"http:\/\/etow.org\" target=\"_blank\">Ears To Our World<\/a>, which uses self-powered shortwave radios to further its mission. His description of our radios during his introduction was as insightful as it was humorous:<a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7033\" alt=\"BBC_Click\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click.jpeg\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click.jpeg 259w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/BBC_Click-100x74.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c&#8230;Portable battery powered devices that can stream audio in real time all via an intuitive touch interface.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Aptly put. \u00a0Shortwave radio, after all, has several profound benefits over the Internet, the three most significant being: <strong>1)<\/strong> radio<em> has<\/em> <em>no regard for national borders<\/em>, and crosses them effortlessly;<em>\u00a0<strong>2)<\/strong> listeners retain anonymity<\/em>\u00a0(thus cannot be readily tracked nor penalized by repressive authorities); and <strong>3)<\/strong> radio\u00a0<em>requires no apps nor subscriptions to work. \u00a0<\/em>Nor even, for that matter, a power grid. \u00a0It&#8217;s &#8220;just&#8221; an inexpensive &#8220;battery powered device&#8221; that can bring listeners vital lifesaving information, and, well&#8230;the world.<\/p>\n<p>In short, I continue to stand by what I reported to UNESCO last year:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/78237120&amp;color=ff6600&amp;auto_play=false&amp;show_artwork=true\" height=\"166\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThis post joins our popular tag: <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/tag\/why-shortwave-radio\/\" target=\"_blank\">Why Shortwave Radio?<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many thanks to SWLing Post reader, Alex, who shares this essential listening: an audio report aired at 17:45 GMT today by Lucy Burton of the BBC World Service.
