It&#8217;s the modern version of shortwave radio, or BitTorrent from space.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fascinating concept: deploy low-cost, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CubeSat\" target=\"_blank\">CubeSat satellites<\/a> which broadcast data in a way that it should be accessible to anyone with a wi-fi enabled device such as smart phone or computer. Specifically, Outernet states that they will be using, &#8220;<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">globally-accepted, standards-based protocols, such as\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DVB-S2\">DVB<\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_Radio_Mondiale\">Digital Radio Mondiale<\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User_Datagram_Protocol\">UDP-based<\/a>\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercewireless.com\/tech\/story\/cisco-stadiumvisionmobile-leverages-wi-fi-multicast\/2013-02-03\">WiFi multicasting<\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>(What? \u00a0Did they say <a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/tag\/drm\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Radio Mondiale<\/a>? \u00a0They did indeed.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m all about freedom of and access to information, so I hope Outernet is successful.\u00a0They&#8217;ve published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outernet.is\/\" target=\"_blank\">an ambitious timeline<\/a> with a goal of having CubeSats ready to deploy as soon as June of 2015. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outernet.is\/\" target=\"_blank\">For more information, check out Outernet&#8217;s project page<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a new project in the works, Outernet, that aspires to bring the international accessibility of shortwave radio along with the versatility of the Internet.
