Sometimes, it can be\u00a0<em>very<\/em> difficult to decide which radio is better&#8211;especially if you have more than two radios to compare at a time.<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;ll often do to help level the playing field is to make an in-line recording of each radio (<a title=\"This is the Zoom H2N\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B005CQ2ZY6\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=211189&amp;creative=373489&amp;creativeASIN=B005CQ2ZY6&amp;link_code=as3&amp;tag=swlcom01-20\" target=\"_blank\">via my Zoom H2N handy recorder<\/a>) with the mic and volume levels equal. I then tune to the same frequency with similar filter settings (wide, maximum RX gain, antennas fully extended, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>I also like comparing radios while listening to weak signals and\/or when conditions are less favorable.\u00a0Those were exactly the circumstances yesterday when\u00a0I pitted four radios against each other: the <a title=\"Check out the ATS-909X on the SWRI\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/db\/2011\/01\/sangean-ats-909x\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sangean ATS-909X<\/a>, <a title=\"Check the PL-660 out on the SWRI\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/db\/2011\/01\/tecsun-pl-660\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tecsun PL-660<\/a>, <a title=\"A review of the Tecsun PL-880 portable shortwave radio\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/a-review-of-the-tecsun-pl-880-portable-shortwave-radio\/\">Tecsun PL-880<\/a> and the <a title=\"Check out the Sony in the SWRI\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/db\/2011\/01\/sony-icf-sw7600gr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sony ICF SW7600GR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I found a weak signal from <em>Radio Romania International<\/em> on 11,975 kHz. Normally, the signal would have been stronger, but propagation was rough and QSB (fading) was pronounced at times. Under these conditions you get the opportunity to hear how the AGC circuit handles fading and troughs, how the noise floor sounds as conditions change and note the overall sensitivity.<\/p>\n<p>While I give priority to a receiver&#8217;s sensitivity and selectivity, there&#8217;s more to evaluate&#8211;for example, sometimes the more sensitive radio may be less pleasing to listen to.<\/p>\n<p>Below are three recordings of <em>Radio Romania International<\/em> made from three of the four radios tested (I did not include one of the four radios that was notably less sensitive). These are audio snapshots, but represent what a listener would hear via headphones during similar conditions.
