{"id":9329,"date":"2014-04-18T10:38:07","date_gmt":"2014-04-18T14:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/?p=9329"},"modified":"2014-04-18T10:38:07","modified_gmt":"2014-04-18T14:38:07","slug":"commradio-introduces-the-cr-1a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/commradio-introduces-the-cr-1a\/","title":{"rendered":"CommRadio introduces the CR-1a"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CommRadioCR1a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9330\" src=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CommRadioCR1a.jpg\" alt=\"CommRadioCR1a\" width=\"731\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CommRadioCR1a.jpg 731w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CommRadioCR1a-300x130.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/CommRadioCR1a-100x43.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to <a title=\"Dave's RX Page\" href=\"http:\/\/n9ewo.angelfire.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Zantow (N9EWO)<\/a> for apprising me of an update to the CommRadio line: the new <strong>CommRadio CR-1a<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on information published by <a title=\"CommRadio's website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commradio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CommRadio<\/a>, it appears that the main difference is a change to the\u00a0USB hardware which has been improved to provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Digital I-Q (for third-party SDR developers), and<\/li>\n<li>One-step user programming\u00a0(versus two-step with the CR-1).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other\u00a0differences are minor,\u00a0and primarily\u00a0cosmetic: for example, the CR-1a OLED display is now amber instead of green. Also, the CR-1a lacks the 1\/8\u201d HF antenna jack\u00a0found on the CR-1\u00a0(CommRadio notes that the HF-BNC jack is superior).<\/p>\n<p>Software updates and RF-analog DSP architecture are identical to <a title=\"Review of the CommRadio CR-1 software defined radio\" href=\"http:\/\/swling.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/review-of-the-commradio-cr-1-software-defined-radio\/\">the original CommRadio CR-1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To me, the USB update is\u00a0significant in that it results in the\u00a0CR-1a&#8217;s ability to export IQ data via a USB cable.<\/p>\n<p><em>This could make the CR-1a a very versatile and portable stand-alone or computer-linked SDR. <\/em>Better yet, it can\u00a0even be battery powered: the only SDR I know of with this feature.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"CommRadio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commradio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">For more details, check out CommRadio&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many thanks to Dave Zantow (N9EWO) for apprising me of an update to the CommRadio line: the new CommRadio CR-1a.
