Photographer: Stuart Franklin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today is the 25th anniversary of the horrible events that took place in Beijing&#8217;s Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, during which Chinese\u00a0troops opened fire\u00a0on unarmed student demonstrators.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Download\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/download\/RadioBeijingTiananmenSquare\/RadioBeijing-TiananmenSquare.mp3\" target=\"_blank\">In this off-air shortwave radio recording of Radio Beijing<\/a>, made on June 3rd, 1989,\u00a0you&#8217;ll hear the news reader\/editor depart from the script and comment on the massacre of protestors in Tiananmen Square:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/RadioBeijingTiananmenSquare\" width=\"500\" height=\"30\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s believed this brave news editor\u00a0was detained shortly after the broadcast and spent years in a detention (re-training) camp.<\/p>\n<p>Rest assured, you will hear no mention of the <a title=\"Click here to read on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989\" target=\"_blank\">Tiananmen Square protests<\/a>\u00a0on <em>China Radio International <\/em>today&#8211;even though this year marks the 25th anniversary of the event. China&#8217;s state media goes to great lengths to keep\u00a0this sort of on-air protest from happening again.
