The return of Radio London on 1206 kHz (July 29 – August 14, 2023)

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, WD3C, who shares the following announcement:

RADIO PIRATE: The return of Big L Radio London on 1206 kHz, 24 hours a day, from July 29th to August 14th. Back with, in my pocket, a temporary license issued by OFCOM. This time Big L will be broadcasting not from a ship but from studios in a double decker red bus installed in Felixstowe’s Spa Pavilion car park on the seafront. This is an initiative of Ray Anderson, RadioFab and the Spa. Radio Caroline will no longer be the only pirate to have boarded for the 17 days of this special broadcast which will also broadcast all the hits of the years “Pirate Radio” with many famous DJs of the past!

You can tune in to 1206 kHz or find out more at www.biglradiolondon.co.uk ( RadioFab.com Facebook)

On August 12th, catch “Roger “Twiggy” Day’s Pirate Radio Hits Show” on stage at the Spa
Pavilion Felixstowe with Dave Berry, Vanity Fare and Chris Farlowe.

Many former DJ’s from pirate station are participating in the event. August 14 marks the 56th anniversary of the adoption of the “Maritime Offenses Act”. This will be, once again, the last day of broadcast of this ephemeral radio on 1206 khz.

Today’s the inaugural day of Big L’s return!

I’m choking up listening to this. I was born in NYC in 1961 and missed the whole great chapter of what was offshore radio in the 60s. It was not until many years later that I learned that the Radio London PAMs jingles on my beloved album THE WHO SELL OUT were *real*, not fabricated for the album, and thanks to the web, I found and devoured as many airchecks of Big L as I could find.

Now, sitting in my Bayonne studio (that’s Bayonne, New Jersey, not France), I’m loving every damn moment of this return of Big L! I tuned in at 5:35 AM Eastern US time / 10:35 GT, and the stream was going in & out; it stayed great for a couple hours after that, then went down around 12:35 GT. I imagine they’re having lots of people overloading the server, so I’ll be patient – great things are worth waiting for 🙂 . Thanks Radio London! <3

HI from Peter tankard in Sheffield.
IT will be nice to have Big L back on Air. I also think it Would be fantastic if off-com could give them a permanent license so they could stay on air. I could get Big L back in 2008 very clear in the day time on 1395 in Sheffield but now radio sea breeze comes in very well on that channel in the day time in Sheffield It will be interesting if I can hear Big L on 1206 in the day time in Sheffield or even at night I think Big L is a very good Station. I use to listen to Mack Reed a lot and I can remember the cheeky girls on Big L two

Thanks for sharing. OFCOM should issue a permanent license to Radio London.

However, this is a political issue. Freedom of speech is dangerous, say those who think they know best.

The person behind this tribute station has not applied for a permanent licence. Ofcom has granted hundreds of licences including to stations that follow a format of 60s, 70’s and 80’s music. This has nothing to do with free speech.
