‘Solar Generators’: Dan Sets the Record Straight on Battery Banks

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor Dan Van Hoy, who writes:

I finally made a video that I’ve wanted to do for a long time covering the false claims on Amazon and elsewhere that portable power stations are “solar generators.” That was after I heard a radio ad by one prepper-type company bragging about the features of their “solar generator.”

Probably most of the SWLing Post crew is aware of this problem but may want someplace to send their family and friends with more details:

    Dan thanks for your expose` of the description of Your “Solar” generator.You probably saved numerous buyers from being disappointed when they receive their battery in a box and the fact that it can’t generate “squat” which is what they bought it for at a steep price.Marketing is a game in semantics,enticing a buyer to buy their product,more than the other sellers.Dan your video was outstanding work ! I made a comment on Youtube,thanks again
    Buyer Beware is Always Good Advice;
    “Buyer beware,” or caveat emptor in Latin, means that the responsibility for checking the quality and suitability of a product or property falls on the buyer before making a purchase. In essence, buyers are expected to conduct their own due diligence and are generally not protected against defects or issues discovered after the sale, provided the seller didn’t conceal information or make fraudulent misrepresentations. icing the people to buy whatever they are selling.From Google

      I don’t know where the last sentance came from,a mystery but my comment ended with the word “misrepresentation” Google provided the explanation of “Buyer Beware” only

    If you think that is bad try ‘6000Miles TV Antenna HD Antenna for Smart and All Digital TV Antenna fo….
    It will pick up ABC, Fox, NBC, CBS, PBS, ION, Telemondo, Unimas, CW, CNN’. These are being marketed to Australians at least 11, 000 km (6800 miles) away, Since VHF and UHF signals travel in straight lines the earth must be flat!
    Australia has its own broadcasters,
    This is a tiny indoor antenna containing USB powered broadband amplifier. All for $US 25 down to $US1 with free postage!
    Reliable reception using a high gain antenna, with masthead amplifier is limited to about 150 km (100 miles) from a high power regional transmitter.
    Lastly, antennas pickup electromagnetic waves, they are designed for a frequency range. The don’t care what the waves contain digital or analog colour or black & white or even pictures or sound!!

    While I 100% agree with the point made in the video, after seeing years of this marketing gabble, getting wound up about the term “solar generator” is akin to being upset about CTCSS tones on FRS radios being marketed as “privacy codes.” Those who care will already know or will figure it out PDQ, and the those who don’t know probably don’t care.

    Still, yeah, every time I hear “privacy code” or “solar generator” a small part of me wants to go publicly ridicule a snake-oil salesman. Too bad the days are so short.
