Tom Stiles’ preliminary look at the new Eton Executive Traveler III

I’ve just discovered our buddy, Tom Stiles, has taken delivery of the new Eton Executive Traveler III. He’s posted a casual overview of this little receiver on his YouTube Channel:

I’m looking forward to comparisons between the two versions of the radio, but like Tom, I suspect these Traveler III versions are identical in terms of receiver design. The changes/updates in the model are likely only cosmetic.

I love the leather cover on the new Executive version, though I wish the antenna could be extended with the cover in place. Seems to me if the leather cover were designed to fold open from the top down (from the front of the radio) instead of bottom up, it would have remedied this problem.

I believe the Traveler III, in general, is an excellent little portable–certainly a proper ultralight MW DX machine (check out how it scored in Gary DeBock’s comparison). No SSB mode, but it does have great features like alarms and RDS for those who like to travel.

A few retailers now have the Executive Traveler III in stock:

I am now reviewing the new Eton Executive Satellit radio. So far it appears to be the same as the Traveler III upgrade. Difference color, case and antenna. The external antenna connector maybe be different as on the new Satellit I can use a mono plug and it does not short to the antenna. I will be posting some reviews on my YouTube channel soon but there won’t be much to report at this point. Eton appears to be making minor changes to some of their radio and raising the price back up. Hopefully Jay Allen will dig into it and find more differences which hopefully are improvements over the previous model of this radio.

The ads make it appear that the case (not the cover) is an ivory color. Unfortunately, it is a cheap silver color. So the older black one looks much better than the Executive.

Like you, I’m not the biggest fan of of the silver chassis, Tom. The one radio that comes to mind that pulls it off is the Sony ICF-SW7600GR. 🙂

I especially don’t like the silver plastic trim they are putting in vehicles now days. But in the case of radios,if the radios work great then it doesn’t matter.

A few of my viewers pointed out that the antenna could be extended and still have the cover open by using the double joints on the antenna and moving it so that it extends out the side instead of straight out. Love that feedback I get from my viewers.
