More RadioShack store closing details including dates

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Dave Zantow (N9EWO), who writes:

Here is a very interesting PDF legal document (via Prime Clerk) that not only has the “COMPLETE” RadioShack store list that are closing by early April (Tranche One and Two) but with important dates given.

Click here to download Docket 98-2 (PDF).

Yes, sadly the store I worked in for over 8 years is closing by (before) April 6th when this store will become Sprint only. Being in a Mall , its funny it was not closed in the first bankruptcy ?? It’s been in that spot since late 1981.

Many thanks, Dave. As I mentioned in this previous post, poor RadioShack is all but dead for us hobbyists and Makers–one last chance to grab some closeout deals before the retail outlets become Sprint stores.

Spread the radio love

Can’t imagine a Christmas without a visit to the local Radio Shack. Guess ours will go, to be replaced by another nails salon hi hi.

So the Radio Shacks will be turned into Sprint stores. Same as in Canada about 10+ years they turned into Bell stores. You won’t find much building stuff anymore. Try to buy copper clad boards or etching solutions, faget it! I discovered that there are electronic suppliers; one near Toronto, but certainly not as conveniently as Radio shack was, all those years!

I certainly agree with John Howieson. Not only that it was one of the only convenient stores in town to either order or buy coax for ham radio needs and the products were up to ham specifications!

Remember Allied Electronics? Then Allied-Radio Shack, then Tandy (Tandy Leathercraft). I expected Radio Shack to fail decades ago after it became part of Tandy. Allied died and then re-emerged as the Allied Electronics we know now, minus the hobby greats like Knight Kit. We’ll never again see the days of Heath Kit and other great hobby electronics. The more surface mount and digital, the less building, and the more control the government has over every one. When radio bites the dust and we need to pay for everything whether via a cell contract or PC internet connection we are no longer free. I still remember when shortwave was active and ships used CW and we could listen to other countries and ships. Now, next to nothing compared to then.

Well stated. I too expected radio shack to fail once Tandy took over the helm. Having grown up and learned electronics in the 1960’s when you could still build things was a great experience. It just is not the same.having lost that. I still work as an electronics tech but few things are still repaired. Just swapped out or replaced.

I HOPE THAT RADIO SHACK CAN SURVIVE THIS BLOW AND MAKE A COMEBACK WITH THE PARENT COMPANY OF SPRINT. MAYBE GIVE THEM SOME TIME AND THIS 90 YEAR OLD COMPANY CAN HOPEFULLY SURVIVE!
