About Bill Tilford

Bill has been a shortwave listener since the 1960s, a program host and producer for the past several years, and he currently produces and hosts From the Isle of Music, Uncle Bill's Melting Pot and WBCQ Concert Hall in addition to curating the Radio Angela block of entertainment programs on that station and periodic collaborative specials with other stations. He also writes about Cuban music including on the website TIMBA.com and is active in the music industry as a producer and liner notes writer.

For our final program of 2016, we bring you a special Cuban dance party without interview, plus a tribute to Pérez Prado, who was born 100 years ago on December 11, 1916.

This week, our special guest will be Degnis Bofill, an emerging young percussion star in Cuba who received two awards in this year’s JoJazz competition. We’ll have a brief interview and some music that features him on percussion. Also, in honor of their GRAMMY® nominations, we will feature music from Los Van Van’s La Fantasia and Chucho Valdes’ Tribute to Irakere. And, as always, other good things.

New Winter Schedule for From the Isle of Music

This week, our special guest will be guitarist and composer Sergio Valdés Garcia, who in addition to doing much of the soundtrack for the film Juan de los Muertos also recorded some excellent music with his group Elévense. Also, we will have some authentic Rumba by Team Cuba de la Rumba in honor of the Rumba’s recent recognition by UNESCO.

On November 15 (November 14 local date in the Americas), our special guest will be Cuban Jazz phenomenon Harold López-Nussa, who will share some of his wonderful new album El Viaje. We will also play some new Timba recordings and other excellent Cuban dance music.
Then, the next two weeks, by popular demand, we will rebroadcast our two recent episodes dedicated to JoJazz.

For the B16 season,  our transmission on WBCQ moves to 0100-0200 UTC Tuesdays (which means 8-9pm EST Mondays in the Americas).  On Channel 292, we stay at 1900-2000 UTC Tuesdays, which will now be 2000-2100 CET.
Next week:
JoJazz is the most important competition for young Jazz musicians in Cuba. This week, we will dedicate our entire program to it.
Our November 8 (November 7 in the Americas on WBCQ) program offers music from past JoJazz competitors and an interview with the Joaquin Betancourt, who directs and produces projects involving many of them.
