Allan’s (W2AEW) excellent “You Tube” Video has just been posted here on the CountyComm GP-5/SSB:
Many thanks for sharing this video, Dave!
Readers: I suggest you check out the library of informative videos Allan (W2AEW) has created over the years and even subscribe to his YouTube channel. His tutorial videos are quite professional and he does a brilliant job explaining complex electronic principles. Indeed, be sure to check out one of his latest on the ETOW HumanaLight kit:
I purchased one of these after viewing some video reviews, but it doesn’t seem to work as well for me as it did for the folks who have posted written reviews and videos that I’ve seen.
The audio shuts off unexpectedly. I have to turn the volume knob a bit, but a little while afterwards, the audio shuts off again. The receiver seems to be a little deaf as well. Stations with 10 over S9 on my base station are barely audible with the GP-5/SSB.
Also, when listening to Amateur stations, it picks up signals better with the built-in whip than when connected to a random long wire, which seems really odd.
I notified the retailer and they sent me an RMA# so I can return it, but I have to pay return shipping for a defective unit – which I’m not too happy about.
I had a similar experience with a Sony SW (7600) receiver many years ago … as for replacement, Sony kept sending me more defective radios that apparently other people had returned to them. Some of them were worse than the one I originally returned. It ended up costing me roughly $30. out of pocket with all the return shipping – (just to test-drive their junk radios).
It would be nice if there was a local retailer that I could get another radio from to compare with the one I received.
Wow, an excellent video review by W2AEW. I wasn’t in the market for another receiver, but after watching the review … hmm? He deserves a commission on all future sales. Very nicely done. Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to investigate the rest of Allan’s offerings on his YouTube Channel.
Happy New Year SWL’ers!
