An SWL perspective on US/Cuba relations

WFL_015Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, London Shortwave, who has posted an article on his blog regarding US/Cuba relations after Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro announced, last Tuesday, the re-establishment of relations. London Shortwave has included recordings from the VOA, Radio Marti and Radio Havana Cuba.

The majority of content on Radio Marti is propaganda that is influenced by the Cuban American’s who live in Miami. It’s station with one purpose to blast Castro. Also it only pushes the view of the right-wing community in Miami. People in Cuba are smart enough to already know this.

TV Marti is even a funnier venture. The TV station seen by no one. There is only one place to see TV Marti in Cuba. And thats in the lobby of the US Interest Section in Havana.

Both radio and television services of Marti should be closed. It would save the US government millions.

What I didn’t like about his post is the stated assumption that the VOA reflects “official” USA policy. At this point, the only component of the VOA that is official policy is a commentary spoken as an editorial. Also, I was disturbed by his assessment that Radio Marti is solely propaganda; while I don’t speak enough Spanish to judge for myself, I consider his claim a contentious one…
