Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor and noted political cartoonist, Carlos Latuff, who shares his radio log art of a BBC World Service broadcast to Ukraine and Russia in English.
BBC, 5875 kHz, listened in Porto Alegre, Brazil, March 19, 2022, 21h32 (UTC).
Part of news bulletin: Russian missiles hit military base in Ukraine, killing soldiers.
BBC announced it’s broadcasting news to war-ravaged Ukraine and parts of Russia…in English!
I enjoy your art. Thanks for sharing. I wish the BBC would use your art for QSL requests.
But the assumption that many Ukrainians may not understand English needs to be examined more closely.
I suspect quite a few Ukrainians speak or at least understand some English. English is taught in public schools. It is also required for higher education in many fields. I learned this when I visited Poland and was surprised at how many people knew a little English. I met a hiker named Marta who was a doctor. She explained that the vast libraries of primary information in the medical profession are first published in English. As are the best textbooks and periodicals. Ukraine is full of well-educated and worldly people. Many speak multiple languages. English is a universal language just like the dollar is a universal currency. I only learned this by extensive travel and always carrying US dollars.
