Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Ralf Bender, who shares the following news:

Hello SWLing Post,

I send you a translation of an announcement of a special german broadcast with tradition:
MEDIA BROADCAST broadcasts NDR radio program worldwide via shortwave on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Eve sailors all over the world look forward to a special service provided by MEDIA BROADCAST for Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). Then NDR Info, the information radio of the NDR, as well as the digital radio program NDR Info Spezial broadcast from 20:05 clock the traditional program “Greeting on board”.

With the popular radio format, family and friends send Christmas greetings to crews and passengers on cargo and cruise ships who travel the world’s waterways away from home during the holidays. “Greeting on board” is broadcast since Christmas 1953. The transmission takes place via the shortwave infrastructure of MEDIA BROADCAST.

The whole press release can be find here (in german): http://www.radioszene.de/116143/heiligabend-ndr-kurzwelle-gruss-an-bord.html

Take care everyone

I heard 11,650 at 1900 UTC sign on and currently have readable signals on 6,155 kHz and 9,830 kHz at 2155 UTC in Chicago. Listening on an Icom IC7300 with a Wellbrook ALA-1530 loop at my condo downtown.

The 2100-2300Z frequencies are much better, just as I anticipated. The Sony ICF-SW7600GR ** with ** a single slinky, 20′ lead plus the 65′ helical slinky, pulls in every channel with the exception of 9650 (another broadcaster is coming through). I can even – faintly – receive the targeted transmissions to the Indian Ocean (9765) & to the South Atlantic (9830). The South Atlantic might be slightly weaker (but probably the most variable – occasionally with stronger peaks) than the 9765, but the others are decent with the 5930 the best.

BTW, the PL-680 doesn’t come close to the Sony. I guess all compact portables are not created equally.

Overall … slinky or not … it’s not Radio Romania International but it’s very listenable on 5930 & 6115 … and definitely readable/confirmable on 5 of the 6 freqs with my Sony. I’m impressed.

Thanks for the info … I am able to barely receive 9800 & 9790 but hopefully the conditions for the 2200-2400Z broadcasts will improve.
