Balázs spots a vintage receiver in “Jakob the Liar”

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Balázs Kovács, who writes:

Jakob the Liar (1999)

A radio receiver plays a main role here next to Robin Williams in a Jewish ghetto in Nazi-occupied Poland in the second world war.

Here I added three additional photos about the radios from the last year when we visited the Kraków area, the museums of Oskar Schindler’s Factory and Auschwitz.

Thank you for sharing your images, Balázs. I do not recognize the tube radio in Jakob the Liar. I do love the tuning eye.  Anyone know the model? Please comment!

Of course, I’ll add this post to our ever growing archive of radios in film!

Spread the radio love

As for “tuning eye”, some of those old radios also spotted a so-called “magic eye” to help tuning stations, and if someone likes them, they’re still available; for example, check this

sure, the above work on audio frequencies, but I suppose that with a bit of circuitry the tube may be adapted to deal with RF or just used “as is” and placed inside an external amplified speaker box 🙂 also, I think that a “magic eye” may be a good addition to “The Sproutie” receiver

Robin Williams was in the film, but I believe that’s Alan Arkin next to the radio in the photo. Not sure who the woman actress is.

Yes, that description was about the movie, not that picture. As I remember the woman was Arkin’s wife in the story and based on the IMDB she was played by Grazyna Barszczewska.

Recently I found another similar radio with a tuning eye in the hungarian movie “Mom and Other Loonies in the Family” (2015): https://imgur.com/a/A3P6RVP
