Many thanks to SWLing Post contributors Alan and Tracy Wood for sharing the following news. Tracy writes:

Thomas –
This has an SWL connection as VLW9 and VLW15 ABC-Perth were widely heard in the glory days of shortwave.

The article has several other stories linked to radio, the tower one being the most interesting.

This is disturbingly short sighted really.. In traditionally Australia the “information” stations are on MW AM & the “entertainment” stations are on VHF FM – The reasons are obvious as the information that is needed during the (all too frequent) natural disasters in Oz needs to be heard in a much wider area than FM can service. It has nothing to do with “interference to AM in the city” – sigh…
Just in the last few Months, with bush fires raging in Victoria, the FM & AM transmitters for a major city were burnt out and all evacuation info etc. was broadcast on the ABC AM station from Melbourne. Western Australians should be up in arms about this ( even if Perth residents are not!

As a regular listener of ABC Perth radio, out of curiosity, how many listeners will be lost because the changeover to FM from AM, by that I am of course referring to the effective range of FM signal against the AM signals range?.
Is this move actually progress I wonder?.
