Mark spots a Grundig in Persons of Interest

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor Mark Hirst, who writes:

I’m re-watching Person of Interest, which reappeared on Netflix recently, and spotted a Grundig radio (logo obscured) in one of the episodes.

Can anyone ID this model? I owned one of these at some point and gave it to a family member who was interested in shortwave. I recall it had great audio.

I agree. It is a Grundig S450DLX. I own one. (Actually, my second one.) Gorgeous radio. A good performer in many ways, although it does suffer from so-called “digititis” (digital hash sounds), especially in the Medium Wave Band. It also seems especially sensitive to it’s surrounding environment. Some otherwise “good” radios just seem to be…another is the Eton E5, which was an excellent radio in it’s class…but, oh my…don’t have a single TV or appliance turned on in the house when you’re trying to use it…whereas other radios might ALSO be affected, but to a much lesser degree.

Why is my S450 DLX my second one? Well…I think it was my own fault. I left the batteries in too long without using/replacing. Oh, they didn’t leak, mind you. However, they just got “too weak” and the radio went into sort of a “zombie mode”. This had happened a few times, actually, and I was always able to try re-sets, and many other things to coax it into waking up. Well, this last time, I couldn’t and finally gave up. I guess I didn’t learn my lesson. Now, with this new one, I am much more vigilant!

Has anyone else noticed these things about either the S450DLX…or the Eton E5? (Also sold as the Grundig G5.)

It’s a Grundig/Eton Field radio. An S-350, I believe? Not really a true Grundig, though it carries that badge.
