China Chooses DRM for Its AM Broadcast Future

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, David Iurescia, who shares this Radio World article, which reports that China has officially adopted the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) standard to modernize its AM radio bands.

The plan includes technical guidelines for analog/DRM simulcasting, requirements for provincial transmitters to deploy DRM systems, and a nationwide push for DRM-capable receivers in vehicles.

Dan Unearths Radio Memories: A 1990s Treasure Trove of Broadcast Ephemera

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor Dan Greenall, who writes:

Hi Thomas

Before the days of the internet and e-mail, handwritten or typed reception reports mailed out to broadcast stations would often net the lucky DXer other goodies, including station brochures, program schedules, frequency guides, station stickers, blank reception report forms, pennants, booklets, and other items in addition to that coveted QSL verification.

The QSLs were stored carefully away in albums or shoe boxes, while much of the other paper ephemera eventually (over the years) made its way into a recycle bin. Recently, while cleaning out some storage boxes in the basement, I came across a number of envelopes containing some of the aforementioned items from the early to mid-1990s. To preserve these newly discovered pieces of radio history, I have scanned much of the material and included it here.

Here’s a sampling:

Carlos’ Illustrated Radio Listening Report and Recording of NHK (July 30, 2025 – Tsunami Coverage)

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor and noted political cartoonist, Carlos Latuff, who shares the following illustrated radio listening report of a recent NHK broadcast.

Carlos notes:

When an emergency occurs, such as an earthquake or tsunami, NHK, the Japanese public broadcaster, switches its programming to exclusively news coverage of the event. Even the broadcaster’s homepage switches to a light version to reduce cell phone battery consumption.

When I received news of the tsunami, it was already after 10 p.m. in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and the propagation to Japan at that time is terrible; you couldn’t hear anything!

However, in the morning, after 4 a.m., propagation reopens, and then it was possible to monitor part of NHK’s radio coverage of the tsunami.
