Global 24: Update

9395kHzGlobal 24 just sent the following message (also posted on their website):

Dear Global 24 Listeners,

Thank you for a remarkable 12 hours.

Over 2,500 of you (confirmed unique) visited our website in just a few short hours last night and thousands more have visited the website since then.

A big thank you to the over 500 reception reports we have received so far.  More are coming in every minute and we are very grateful for all of them.  Please keep them coming.  We are very interested in reports from the US West Coast as we plan any possible configuration changes.  However, we still need reports from everywhere  – so please send them to [email protected] or fill out the web form here.

We are also experiencing some technical difficulties with the internet.  We are currently having issues moving the massive amount of programs from our producers to our transmitter via FTP connections.  These slow internet connections are preventing us right now from getting new programs loaded for on-the-air broadcasts.  Bear with us as we get this working correctly this weekend.  In the near term, you may hear a few more program repeats that we had planned.

It should also be noted that these same bandwith challenges are preventing us from posting content on the website.   We will have this sorted shortly as fast as possible.

Again, thank you very much from all of us for your feedback, questions and comments.   We value your support tremendously.

Sincerely,

The Global 24 Team

Introducing Shortwave’s Newest Broadcaster: Global 24 Radio

Global24

This is one of the most exciting developments I’ve seen in international broadcasting in ages: an around-the-clock, fixed-frequency, commercial shortwave radio broadcaster, transmitting via WRMI.

The new Global24 will begin broadcasting on Friday, October 31, 2014 at 7:00 PM EDT (2300 UTC November 1st) on 9395 kHz.

Below, you’ll find Global24’s first press release:

(Source: Global24Radio.com)

(Hollywood, FL) Oct. 21, 2014 – Global 24 Radio LLC announced today that its inaugural broadcast will go live at 7:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31 (0000 UTC November 1), with a line-up of new and well-known programs and around-the-clock English language programming.  The broadcast can be heard 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 9395 kHz on WRMI broadcasting from Okeechobee, Florida.

“We’re very excited about launching Global 24 and the important contributions it will make to shortwave radio listening – as both a medium worth preserving and a vital part of the modern media mix for so many listeners around the world,” said Phil Workman, general manager of Global 24.   “Our broadcast will appeal to dedicated shortwave listeners (SWL) all over the world looking for breaking news, opinion and music.”

Global 24 aims to revitalize the shortwave medium by bringing general interest news and entertainment into sharper focus for listeners looking for high quality programming on a daily basis.  Regular listeners will be informed, entertained and engaged in an ever more complex world.

According to Jeff White, general manager of WRMI,  “Global 24 represents another step in the long overdue commercialization of shortwave radio.  We are excited to be working with them on their ambitious program to engage and entertain a global audience.”

RNW: Antenna repairs under way in Madagascar

(photo: RNW)

RNW Madagascar was hit by a tropical cyclone last week and incurred heavy damage. I’m very happy to read the report below that antenna repairs are under way:

(Source: RNW Media Network)

We have received some more photos from our colleagues in Madagascar, showing the damage to the antennas caused last week by Tropical Cyclone Giovanna, and repairs under way. The first photo shows the satellite dish that was used to receive BVN TV and the RNW audio channels from the satellite. The broken dish has been replaced by a backup. Damage to several of the antennas was similar to the one in the second photo. One has already been repaired. The third photo shows some repairs taking place on the ground to the feeder of the log periodic antenna.
