A Second Solar Max Peak?

SOLAR MAX — IS A SECOND PEAK COMING? Last October, NOAA and NASA announced that Solar Max has arrived. Only half the sun got the memo. The majority of solar activity has been happening in just one of the sun’s hemispheres–the south. The solar superstorm of May 10, 2024, for instance, was caused by a monster southern sunspot.

It makes you wonder, is the other half of Solar Max still coming? This plot of hemispheric sunspot numbers from SILSO provides some context:

Here we see all seven solar cycles of the Space Age, punctuated by current Solar Cycle 25 on the far right. The most recent cycles are double peaked, with northern sunspots (green) and southern sunspots (red) reaching their own Solar Max ~two years apart. This isn’t big news. Researchers have long known that the two hemispheres of the sun are slightly out of sync. The north vs. south delay is called the “Gnevyshev gap.”

This composite image of last year’s sunspots shows how dominant the southern hemisphere has been:

For forecasters of the solar cycle, this raises an interesting possibility: Maybe the northern peak is still coming. Indeed, there are signs in February 2025 that the pendulum is swinging. This month’s sunspots have been more evenly distributed between the two hemispheres, a sign that activity may be shifting north.

On the other hand, the northern peak might have already occured [sic]. Take another look at the first plot. There is a puny northern peak near the beginning of Solar Cycle 25. Perhaps that was it. (Indeed, that would jibe with the north-first, south-second order of recent double peaks.)

This discussion focuses attention on the north-south balance of sunspots. A northern shift in the months ahead could herald a second peak and another year or two of excellent auroras before Solar Cycle 25 finally peters out. Stay tuned!

New Test Transmissions from Texas Radio Shortwave – Special QSLs Available!

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor Terry Colgan of Texas Radio Shortwave, who writes:

TEXAS RADIO SHORTWAVE TEST BROADCASTS – MARCH 1-2 ON 6070 KHZ & 9670 KHZ

Listener Reports Needed!

In addition to our regular monthly programs, we’ll conduct test broadcasts to improve our reach. Listener reports are crucial in determining whether we should adjust our schedule for April and beyond.

Test Schedule:

6070 kHz – Europe

    • Saturday, March 1, at 1600 UTC
    • Sunday, March 2, at 1200 UTC

Purpose: We are considering replacing 3955 kHz due to severe audio interference from another transmitter at Channel 292. If 6070 kHz provides better reception, we’ll make the switch.

9670 kHz – North America

    • Sunday, March 2, at 2300 UTC

Purpose: We are considering replacing our early morning UTC transmissions with late-night ones if the latter provides better reception.

Listener Reports & Special QSL Cards

We’ll issue a unique verification for accurate reports on these test transmissions and our standard QSL for regular programming. We don’t know what the test QSL will look like, but we promise it will be a great addition to your collection!

To submit a report, listen for at least 20 minutes and email your reception details to [email protected].

Your feedback is essential in shaping our future broadcasts. Thanks for tuning in and supporting Texas Radio Shortwave!

73.

Whistling on the shortwaves

Do you enjoy whistling while you’re at work? We at Imaginary Stations do too and our next programme is the combo show called WSTL—WORK, brought to you by the powers of shortwave radio via Shortwave Gold. The show goes out on Saturday 22nd February 2025 at 1200 hrs UTC on 6160 kHz and also on Sunday 23rd February 2025 at 1000/1400 hrs UTC on 6160 kHz and at 2100 UTC on 3975 kHz.

Expect lots of whistling tunes to keep you going through those shifts at work, ones to keep the Robin in your garden amused if you have the radio on while maintaining the flower beds and songs to make you feel like the wandering whistler (if you’re tuned in whilst on a treadmill). And as we have just read, “People whistle to communicate feelings which cannot be readily expressed in words.” Tune in and receive those (shortwave) feelings.

We also have another episode of Radio Ace featuring the fantastic adventures of the ground/rule breaking DJ Flash Frisbone alongside all sorts of interesting stuff on Wednesday 26th February 2025 at 0300 UTC via WRMI. Tune in as Radio is Ace!

Also we need your help again to cover our production and transmission costs. Even if you can only spare a couple of dollars it still helps to bring our shows to the shortwaves. So please donate to paypal.me/DJFrederick. A heartfelt thanks from all at Imaginary Stations goes out to all the folks who have sent us generous donations in the past!

For more information on all our shows, please write to [email protected] and check out our old shows at our Mixcloud page here.
