Dave spots a Realistic PRO-16 in WKRP episode

“WKRP In Cincinnati” – “Tornado” S01 E12 (February 1979)

“The station staff finds themselves in danger when Herb unplugs a teleprinter just as it is receiving a local tornado warning.”

Look for the Radio Shack Realistic PRO-16 (cat no. 20-165) scanner receiver at 35:15 in this dual episode “Internet Archive” video. A Midland 13-902 weather radio sits on top of the PRO-16 scanner.

Dave spots a Sony CRF-320 in an episode of Taxi

Interesting little tidbit.

Noticed a Sony CRF-320 being used as prop in a 1982 episode of “Taxi” (Season 4 Episode 11), See captured enhanced attached photo [above].

“I Wanna Be Around” : Louie turns the tool room into a survival shelter.

Rafael spots a Tecsun S-2000 in “The Captain”

Greetings from Colombia!

In a Chinese film called “The Captain” (2019) or in its Spanish title “Terror in the Air” that recreates the situations experienced in 2018 by Sichuan Airlines flight 3U8633, when on their trip from Chongqing to Lhasa, they lost pressure due to a broken windshield on the passenger side.

In a scene where an aviation fan finds out about the situation of the plane, a Tecsun model S-2000 appears; which inherited the design and technology of the Grundig Satellit 750, and has also been produced under the Eton brand. It can be seen that the radio is tuned to the 11465 kHz frequency and although it is not a frequency assigned to air mobile traffic, it is very close to a range established for this purpose.

The film also shows what appear to be actual air traffic control centers in China and shows the deployment of airport emergency services in China under the administration of the CAAC.

A little error in the scene is that the radio does not have an external antenna connected, only the telescopic antenna is extended.

Thank you for sharing this, Rafael! Sounds like a great film, especially for us aviation geeks.

Mystery radio in “Orphan Black”

Hey, I’ve known your site for quite a while, ever since someone gave me Sony’s last portable world band radio, the ICF-SW7600 many years ago. Was wondering if maybe you or someone else who peruses your blog would recognize this set in the background of an episode of Orphan Black.

Hard to tell, but it appears to be a more conventional radio. Regardless, it is positively fierce! And since the imrdb seems to have died, I thought I’d ask you. Hope it’s not a bother. I’m still learning so please keep up the good work!

It’s not a bother at all, Alan! Indeed, many here in the SWLing Post community love solving our radio mysteries. Sadly, I can’t get enough detail from the image to determine the model, but I’m willing to bet someone else can! There are a couple good clues in there.

As I see those that like to raise awareness of radios in TV and movies, here’s my submission. A Swedish friend of mine sent this to me and it’s a little rough to follow without knowing the language, but there are certainly radios in the episode!

The radios get going around 3:53 and 4:35, 11:15, etc.

As a side note, I’m happy to see the chess board properly oriented, I’ve frequently seen the board rotated 90 degrees from proper in programs, and even on display in Russian museums!

I spotted this gun fire damaged ‘marine HF’ radio in an episode of ‘Inside Job’ on Netflix.

Great timing, Mark. I watched the first episode of Inside Job this morning. It was a good laugh–quirky show! I love how the animator actually spent a little time illustrating the front panel and even that massive wound coil inside the set! I wonder if he/she is a radio enthusiast…?

Mark spots a scanner in Chicago Fire TV series

I’m currently enjoying ‘Chicago Fire’ on Netflix and spotted this scanner at the fire station.

Taking a wild guess, I typed ‘realistic scanner’ into image search and eventually found one that looked similar, the Realistic Pro-57.

Perhaps scanner enthusiasts can confirm this, and maybe share some memories about it, good or bad!

Thanks for sharing this, Mark! Certainly not an easy scanner to ID from such a quick video frame, but I’m willing to bet some of our readers can comment and confirm the model and share any thoughts about this particular scanner!
