Yamaha CM500 Headphones on sale

YamahaCM500I’ve been using a set of Yamaha CM500 headphones for shortwave radio listening for a couple of years now. They have great audio characteristics for both AM and single-side band listening. They’re very comfortable on the ears and can be worn for long periods of time.

If you’re an amateur radio operator, you’ll be happy to know that the CM500 has an excellent built-in microphone (I write a bit more about this on QRPer.com). Of course, these can be used for a number of other computer applications like Skype.

For a limited time, you can purchase a set of Yamaha CM500’s on sale at Sam Ash music for only $45 US. The regular price is $55 US (still a great value).  I am very tempted to buy a second pair while they’re on sale.

Screen shot: DXtreme Station Log (Click to enlarge)

Bob Raymond, NE1I, owner of DXtreme Software, has just informed me of the release of DXtreme Station Log, Version 10.0 ($89.95 US).

While the station log was designed with the amateur radio operator in mind, Bob also noted that his DXtreme Reception Log — Advanced Edition, was designed for the shortwave listener in mind (also $89.95 US).

If you use logging programs, you might want to check these out. Bob’s site also offers guided tours of both products. Click here for a PDF of the press release.

Excellent price for Grundig G3 at Amazon

GrundigG3Thanks to both Mike and Gary for pointing out that the Grundig G3 is currently $47.21 with free shipping at Amazon.com.

That is the lowest price I’ve ever seen for this excellent shortwave portable. I’ve noticed that the price has actually fluctuated over the past 24 hours, but I haven’t seen it higher than $52.46.

Universal Radio: Used RFSpace NetSDR value

The RFspace NetSDR wideband receiver

The RFspace NetSDR wideband receiver

I just noticed that Universal Radio has an RFSpace NetSDR on their used list.

The NetSDR typically sells for $1449.95 new, this used one (serial number 0014) is selling for $949.95.

Though still a chunk of change, $949.95 is a bargain for the RFSpace NetSDR. If you’ve considered buying the NetSDR, you should jump on this opportunity. Universal Radio stands behind their used receivers–I’ve bought several–so you can buy with confidence.

Annual C.Crane sale on “orphan” radios

CCRaneOrphansI just received an email announcing a sale on C. Crane “orphan” products; customer returned products that C. Crane inspects and gives a full 60 day money-back guarantee and full 1 year warranty. This sale has almost become an annual one and offers great bargains.

I have purchased C.Crane orphan products in the past and have never been disappointed.

The Orphan Sale lasts until February 19th and includes both of their excellent shortwave radios (the CC-Radio SW for $119.95 and the CC-Radio SWP for $34.95). That’s a very low price for both—especially the CC-Radio SWP (check out our review here).

I’m very tempted to buy their CC Witness Plus ($119.95) simply so I can record medium wave with an all-in-one device. (It would be a dream machine if it could record shortwave as well.)

Universal Radio features Grundig S450DXL deal and new catalog

Universal Radio has started a special deal-of-the-week on their home page.  They’re featuring the Grundig S450DLX as their first deal.

At $88.77 US and including the book, “Discover DXing,” this is an excellent gift idea (indeed, we featured this radio in our 2011 gift guide).

I also just received the following news from Universal Radio:

[We’re] pleased to report that our new 2012 print catalog should arrive tomorrow night.

It is our largest print catalog ever, at 132 pages.
We have also (for the first time) made it available as a download (by-chapter) at:

http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog.html

Universal Radio’s catalogs are the only catalogs I keep archives of. They’re great for referencing current production radios and accessories, and later can serve as a resource when researching used prices (another excellent tool is their sold/used item index).

Plus, I always love their cover design.

C.Crane: CC Witness on sale, while supplies last

The C.Crane CC Witness

Though not a shortwave radio, the CC Witness is a very capable AM/FM radio with a built-in digital recorder.  In fact, I know of no other portable with on-board digital recording that receives such stellar reviews. As a result, many medium-wave DXers use the CC Witness while traveling, to capture the sounds of the local radio scene on the go.

For ages, the CC Witness was priced well over $200 US.  Right now, C.Crane is selling their stock of CC Witness radios for $99.95 US.

Clearly, this is an excellent bargain for anyone seeking a very small portable AM/FM radio with on-board digital recording. Note that the CC Witness will also do line-in recordings from other audio sources.
