Christian’s reception of Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel

On Wednesday, I received the following tweet from SWLing Post reader, Christian Diemoz, in Italy:

If you’re not familiar, Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel is located on Esperanza Base in Antarctica. Here’s a bit more info from Wikipedia (and translated from Spanish into English via Google Translate):

“LRA36 Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel (also known as Radio San Gabriel or San Gabriel Archangel Radio) is a radio station broadcasting on 15476 kHz on shortwave and 97.6 MHz for FM,  from Esperanza Base, Antarctica Argentina. Radio National Archangel Gabriel is the southernmost international radio station and the first to broadcast from the Antarctic.

The radio station was founded on October 20 of 1979 and is operated by the staff of the Argentine Army located on the base.

In its beginnings, Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel broadcast on 6030 kHz shortwave and operated with a power of 1 kilowatt .”

Since conditions have been favorable out of South America recently, I’ll attempt to hear Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel’s 10 Kw signal as well.  Thanks for the inspiration, Christian!

For your listening pleasure: forty three minutes of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, recorded on 11,905 kHz at 01:15 UTC, Sept 11, 2014.

Sri Lanka BC is not an easy broadcaster to receive in eastern North America, but band conditions on the 10th and 11th were particularly favorable in the higher bands. As you’ll hear in the recording, the signal out of Trincomalee was reasonably strong; I used the WinRadio Excalibur receiver with my horizontal delta loop antenna.

Indeed, looking through the archives, this may be the first time I’ve recorded Sri Lanka BC.

After an X class solar flare that caused a serious HF radio black-out earlier today, we’ve been rewarded with superb radio conditions this evening in North America.

This is, perhaps, one of the best temporary band openings I’ve experienced this year.  Unfortunately, there’s a good chance an incoming CME could wipe out the bands again in the next 12-24 hours. Check out the forecast here: http://www.solarham.net/

I just received word that The Mighty KBC is moving frequency from 9,925 to 7,375 kHz starting this Sunday September 7, 2014, 00:00 – 02:00 UTC.

The Mighty KBC’s Giant Jukebox is an easy catch in North America–even on a modest portable radio. Make the Giant Jukebox a part of your Saturday evening (or Sunday morning) entertainment.

Tudor, it appears you (and your pup!) live in a very beautiful part of the world. The Romanian countryside certainly makes for a scenic radio listening backdrop. I, too, am a big fan of Saturday Night Country–great stuff!
