C. Crane SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker Deals

Credit: C. Crane (PillowSpeaker2™)

Through 11:59 P.M. on 12/13/17, C. Crane is offering 50% off their popular SoftSpeaker & SoftSpeaker2.  These are “pillow speakers” with soft, washable covers – great for listening while drifting off to sleep.

For the SoftSpeaker, use this promotional code: PS17

For the SoftSpeaker2, use this promotional code: SSV17

I must admit, I don’t own either but I’ve often thought about purchasing version 2 because it has in-line volume control.  This would be a great time to try them!

Anon-Co special offer on the Degen DE1128

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Troy Riedel, who shares the following:

Anon-Co has just placed the Degen 1128 on “special offer” for $46.99 plus $9 shipping to the U.S.

The Degen 1128 is – or was – the Grundig G2 Reporter.  Dave (N9EWO) conducted a great review of the Grundig G2, Degen 1128 & the Degen 1128H.  The G2 had its issues, but the 1128H version is an improved version though still with some quirks.  Dave (N9EWO) only recommends the 1128H version and Anon-Co doesn’t specifically state that their listing is the updated/improved 1128H though their product photo clearly shows “1128” without the H on the radio.  Could this be an old stock photo or a 100% true representation?

If anyone is interested, I’d recommend they first read Dave’s review page – and if potential buyers are still interested – they should contact Anon-Co & ask them to confirm if this is the 1128 or 1128H.  I noticed a few months ago the 1128H was priced $88-$95 direct from China to the USA via Internet retailers & the current delivered eBay price China to the USA is $75.  If the Anon-Co listing is for the 1128H, $55.99 delivered is a good price – though to repeat, confirm with Anon-Co before placing an order.

C. Crane CCRadio-EP Pro: a new enhanced version of the EP

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Troy Riedel, who notes that C. Crane has developed an enhanced version of the original CCRadio-EP AM/FM portable.

C. Crane includes the following description on their website:

The new CC Radio-EP PRO is an enhanced version of the original EP. It has the same simple controls and the same high performance with superior selectivity and sensitivity. The portable CCRadio-EP PRO could be considered a super radio; built for ease of use and outstanding long-range AM with our C. Crane patented Twin Coil Ferrite® AM Antenna. FM performance is excellent.

Great for listening to Talk Radio, NPR®, Music, and Sports. The EP PRO has a wide bass and treble adjustment range for defined music and accurate and lively voice reproduction.

A large, 5-inch speaker is combined with a hi-fidelity amplifier and a “Wide/Narrow” enhancement dial to give extra clarity to AM programs. The dial accuracy of the new EP PRO is superior to our original model. Weight: 3.1 lbs. (without batteries). Size: 11.4″ W x 7.3″ H x 2.75″ D. Runs on four optional “D” batteries (not included). AC adapter is included.

C.Crane lists a shipping date of March 30, 2018 or after.

Since I receive so many questions about affordable radios for mediumwave DXing, I’ll certainly review the CCRadio-EP Pro when it’s available. I look forward to evaluating out a radio with such simple controls!

Troy spots a rare Philips AE3905 on eBay

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Troy Riedel, who writes:

The radio is the PHILIPS AE3905 – and made in … wait … Austria!

There is one on eBay right now.

The first listing started at $275 – there were no takers – so now the second listing is set at $250.

Phillips still has a support page for this tiny little radio – which is essentially a page where people can download a manual:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?scy=DK&slg=EN&ctn=AE3905

Universal Radio lists it on their “Discontinued” page here:

https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/ae3905.html

I do not believe it was ever reviewed in Passport to World Band Radio. The first appearance of it was an advertisement in the 1992 Passport. It also appeared in an ad in the 1993 Passport, but by 1994 it was gone. This radio was released to compete with the Sony ICF-SW100 and was apparently very short-lived.

There isn’t a lot of online information about it, just a forum posting asking members to list “the most over-rated SW radio ever” and this one received a vote. The posting states this radio was known to have capacitor issues (just like every other radio of the era) & “poorly designed battery contacts” that would fail.

There is at least 1 video of the radio on YouTube pitting it against the ICF-SW100, and the Sony is very clearly better.

This appears to be a radio [only] for collectors &/or uber radio enthusiasts, but I feel this price point is a bit steep.

Amazon Deal: Eton Field BT $97.49 shipped

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Troy Riedel, who writes:

Wow, Amazon (this morning) dropped the price on the Eton Field BT to $97.49. Given Amazon’s “stock market-like” pricing, no telling how long this price will last.

Thanks, Troy!  I do believe this is the lowest price I’ve seen on the Field BT, which I consider to be a fine radio–certainly an affordable alternative to the pricier Tecsun S-8800 (if SSB reception is of no concern). The last time Troy shared an Amazon deal with me, it disappeared before I could even post it. Their pricing algorithm is tricky. If you’ve been waiting to bit the bullet, now is likely the best time.
